The Asian Society of International Law regrets to announce the passing of its Advisory Council Member, Professor Onuma Yasuaki.
Professor Onuma was Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo, and Visiting Professor of Cambridge University, University of Paris I, Peking University, Tsinghua University and others. He criticized the fundamental way of traditional West-centric international law, and his scholarly interests long focused on responsibility of war and human rights issues.
He was the author of A Normative Approach to War: Peace, War, and Justice in Hugo Grotius, Le droit international et le Japon : une vision trans-civilisationnelle du monde, International Law in a Transcivilizational World and many others.
He made a great contribution to the establishment of the Society and its Japan Chapter.
The Society extends its condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
